Ingredients

  • 1 cup hot coffee (or hot water)

For the Strawberry Filling:

  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, chopped

  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

  • 1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water (mixed into a slurry)

For the Chocolate Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract


Instructions

Make the Chocolate Cake:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

  3. Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.

  4. Slowly stir in hot coffee or water until batter is well-combined (batter will be thin).

  5. Pour into pans and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

  6. Cool completely before assembling.

Make the Strawberry Filling:

  1. In a saucepan, combine strawberries, sugar, and lemon juice. Cook over medium heat until berries break down (5–7 minutes).

  2. Stir in cornstarch slurry and cook until thickened. Cool completely.

Make the Chocolate Frosting:

  1. Beat butter until creamy.

  2. Add powdered sugar and cocoa powder gradually.

  3. Mix in cream and vanilla until frosting is fluffy and spreadable.

Assemble the Cake:

  1. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread cooled strawberry filling evenly on top.

  2. Add the second cake layer. Frost the top and sides with chocolate frosting.
