Ingredients

For the Cake Base:

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened

  • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar

  • 4 large eggs, room temperature

  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

  • 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk (or 1 cup milk + 1 tbsp lemon juice or vinegar)

For the Chocolate Swirl:

  • 1/2 cup (45g) unsweetened natural cocoa powder

  • 1/4 cup (60ml) hot water or strong brewed coffee

  • 1/3 cup (65g) granulated sugar

    For the Cake Base:

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour your chosen baking pan.

  • Mix chocolate swirl: Combine cocoa, ⅓ cup sugar, and hot liquid. Whisk until smooth and lump-free. Set aside.

  • Prepare cake batter:

    • Mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

    • Cream butter and sugar until fluffy (3–5 minutes).

    • Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla.

    • Alternate adding flour mixture and buttermilk. Mix until just combined.

  • Create marble effect:

    • Fold 2 cups of vanilla batter into the chocolate mixture.

    • Layer batters in the pan and swirl gently with a knife or skewer.

  • Bake: 50–60 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

  • Cool: Rest in pan for 10–30 minutes, then invert or lift out to cool completely.
