Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat oven: Set to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
- Add buttermilk: Gradually pour in the buttermilk, stirring with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
- Shape the dough: Turn onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead for about 30 seconds, just until it comes together. Form a round loaf.
- Score the top: Use a sharp knife to cut a deep “X” on top to help it bake evenly.
- Bake: Place on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool & serve: Let it cool for 10 minutes before slicing. Enjoy with butter or jam!
Notes
- Don’t over-knead; it will make the bread tough.
- If you don’t have buttermilk, substitute with milk + 1 tbsp vinegar or lemon juice (let sit for 5 minutes).
- Add raisins or caraway seeds for a sweeter, more traditional variation.
