Description

This Classic Irish Soda Bread is a no-yeast, rustic bread with a golden crust and a soft, slightly crumbly interior. Made with just a few simple ingredients, this traditional Irish recipe is perfect for serving with butter, jam, or alongside a hearty stew.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk

Instructions

  • Preheat oven: Set to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add buttermilk: Gradually pour in the buttermilk, stirring with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Shape the dough: Turn onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead for about 30 seconds, just until it comes together. Form a round loaf.
  • Score the top: Use a sharp knife to cut a deep “X” on top to help it bake evenly.
  • Bake: Place on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  • Cool & serve: Let it cool for 10 minutes before slicing. Enjoy with butter or jam!

Notes

  • Don’t over-knead; it will make the bread tough.
  • If you don’t have buttermilk, substitute with milk + 1 tbsp vinegar or lemon juice (let sit for 5 minutes).

  • Add raisins or caraway seeds for a sweeter, more traditional variation.
