Description

This Giant Muffaletta Italian Sandwich is packed with layers of turkey ham, salami, mortadella, provolone, mozzarella, and a vibrant olive salad, all nestled inside a round Italian loaf. It’s the ultimate Italian sandwich for any occasion!

Ingredients

  • 1 large round Italian bread loaf (about 10 inches in diameter)

  • 1/4 cup olive oil

  • 1 tsp dried oregano

  • 1 tsp dried basil

  • 1/4 lb each of the following:

    • Thinly sliced turkey ham

    • Thinly sliced beef salami

    • Thinly sliced mortadella

    • Sliced provolone cheese

    • Sliced mozzarella cheese

  • 1 cup olive salad (store-bought or homemade)

  • 1/4 cup sliced pepperoncini peppers (optional)

Instructions

  1. Slice the Bread:

    • Cut the Italian bread loaf horizontally to create a top and bottom half. Set aside.

  2. Make the Dressing:

    • In a small bowl, whisk together ¼ cup olive oil, 1 tsp oregano, and 1 tsp basil. If you’d like to add a touch of sweetness, you can mix in about 1 tbsp of red grape juice (optional, if desired).

  3. Brush the Bread:

    • Brush the dressing generously on both the cut sides of the bread halves, making sure each side is well-coated with the flavorful mixture.

  4. Layer the Meats and Cheeses (on the bottom half):

    • Begin layering with:

      • Turkey ham

      • Beef salami

      • Mortadella

      • Provolone cheese

      • Mozzarella cheese

  5. Add the Olive Salad:

    • Spread the olive salad evenly over the cheese layer. This adds that classic muffaletta flavor!

  6. Add Pepperoncini Peppers (Optional):

    • If you like a little heat, sprinkle some sliced pepperoncini peppers on top of the olive salad.

  7. Assemble the Sandwich:

    • Place the top half of the bread on the sandwich and gently press down to compact the layers.

  8. Wrap & Compress:

    • Wrap the entire sandwich tightly in plastic wrap to hold it together.

    • Place a heavy weight, like a cast-iron skillet or heavy books, on top to compress the sandwich. This helps the flavors meld together.

  9. Refrigerate:

    • Refrigerate the sandwich for at least 2 hours, but preferably overnight, to allow all the flavors to develop.

  10. Serve:

  • Unwrap the sandwich, cut into wedges with a sharp knife, and serve!

Notes

  • This sandwich is perfect for picnics, parties, or meal prep! It can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge for a day or two.

  • You can swap or add other ingredients, such as roasted red peppers or sliced tomatoes, to suit your taste.
