Featuring a rich, moist cocoa cake base topped with a fluffy and creamy milk chocolate mousse, it’s perfect for birthdays, holidays, or any special occasion. A dream come true for fans of chocolate mousse cake, moist chocolate desserts, and elegant layered cakes.

Ingredients

For the Chocolate Cake:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1 large egg

  • 1/2 cup buttermilk

  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil

  • 3/4 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1/2 cup boiling water

For the Milk Chocolate Mousse:

  • 1 cup milk chocolate, finely chopped

  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream

  • 2 tsp gelatin powder

  • 3 tbsp cold water

Instructions

Make the Cake:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease or line a 9-inch round cake pan.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt.

  3. Add egg, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Stir until well mixed.

  4. Gradually add boiling water, mixing until batter is smooth (it will be thin).

  5. Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 30–35 minutes. A toothpick should come out clean.

  6. Cool the cake completely before topping.

Prepare the Mousse:

  1. Sprinkle gelatin over cold water; let bloom for 5 minutes.

  2. Melt chopped milk chocolate in a microwave or double boiler; let cool slightly.

  3. Heat ½ cup heavy cream until warm (not boiling). Stir in gelatin mixture until dissolved.

  4. Slowly stir warm cream into melted chocolate until smooth.

  5. Whip remaining 1 cup heavy cream to soft peaks. Gently fold whipped cream into chocolate mixture until fully incorporated.

Assemble the Cake:

  1. Place cooled cake on serving plate.

  2. Spread or pipe mousse over the cake in an even layer.

  3. Chill the cake for at least 2 hours to set the mousse.

  4. Optionally, garnish with chocolate curls or cocoa powder before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure the cake is fully cooled before adding mousse to prevent melting.

  • Can be made a day in advance and kept refrigerated.

  • Substitute dark chocolate for a richer mousse version.
